The Beautiful God...Jehovah

The more we discern someone’s qualities, the better we know that person, and thus our friendship can deepen. Similarly, the more we come to know Jehovah’s qualities, the better we will know what he is like, and thus our friendship can deepen. Of all God’s wonderful attributes, four are outstanding: his power, wisdom, justice, and love.

The Bible—A Book From God

SUMMARY

TRUTH 1: THE BIBLE IS FROM GOD

“All Scripture is inspired of God.”—2 Timothy 3:16
How is the Bible different from any other book?
The Bible has been translated into about 2,600 languages, and billions of copies have been printed.
It gives us information that we cannot find anywhere else.

TRUTH 2: THE BIBLE IS A BOOK OF PROPHECY

“God . . . cannot lie.”—Titus 1:2
Why can you trust the Bible?

TRUTH 3: THE BIBLE IS DESIGNED TO HELP YOU

“I, Jehovah, am your God, the One teaching you to benefit yourself.”—Isaiah 48:17
What have you learned about the Bible?
  • What the Bible says about scientific matters is accurate.
  • Bible writers were honest.
  • Jesus gave us advice on how to be happy, how to get along with others, how to pray, and how to view money.

TRUTH 4: THE BIBLE CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE

“The word of God is alive and exerts power.”—Hebrews 4:12
What can God’s Word do for you?
  • It can help you to understand God’s purpose.
  • It can help you to know what kind of person you are.
  • It can help you to understand what God expects of you.
God wants you to read, study, and love the Bible.

COVER SUBJECT

How Did Life Begin?

LIFE IS THE RESULT OF ․․․․․.
  1. EVOLUTION
  2. CREATION

Two Questions Worth Asking

1 How Did Life Get Its Start?
2 How Did Living Things Develop?

THE TIME LINE OF CREATION

  • THE BEGINNING
The material heavens and earth are created.Genesis 1:1.
  •
    DARKNESS
The earth is formless, desolate, and dark.Genesis 1:2.
  •
    FIRST DAY
Diffused light evidently penetrates the earth’s atmosphere. If there had been any observer on the surface of the earth, the sources of light would have been imperceptible to him. Yet, the difference between night and day became discernible.Genesis 1:3-5.
  •
    SECOND DAY
The earth is covered with water and a dense mantle of vapor. These two elements are separated, creating a gap between the watery surface and the canopy of vapor. The Bible describes this space as “an expanse between the waters,” and calls it “Heaven.”Genesis 1:6-8.
  •
    THIRD DAY
Surface water subsides and dry ground appears. The atmosphere clears up to allow more sunlight to reach the ground. Some vegetation appears, with new species sprouting through the third and subsequent creative days.Genesis 1:9-13.
  •
    FOURTH DAY
The sun and moon become discernible from the earth’s surface.Genesis 1:14-19.
  •
    FIFTH DAY
God creates underwater creatures and flying creatures in great numbers with the ability to procreate within their kinds.Genesis 1:20-23.
  •
    SIXTH DAY
Land animals are created, both large and small. The sixth day culminates with a masterpiece of God’s physical creation: the first human couple.Genesis 1:24-31.

Teeming With Life

No one knows how many species there are on earth. Estimates vary from 2 million to 100 million.6 How pervasive is life on our planet?
Earth: Just one hundred grams (3.5 ounces) of soil has been found to host 10,000 species of bacteria,7 not to mention the total number of microbes. Some species have been found almost two miles (3 km) underground!8
Air: In addition to the birds, bats, and insects that fly through the air, the atmosphere is filled with pollen and other spores, as well as seeds and—in certain areas—thousands of different kinds of microbes. The diversity of microbial life in the air is “on par with the diversity of microbes in the soil,” says Scientific American magazine.9
Water: The oceans remain largely a mystery because in order to study the watery deep, scientists often have to use costly technology. Even coral reefs, which are relatively accessible and are well-surveyed, may host millions of yet unknown species.
Did this impressive variety of life arise by chance? Many would agree with the poet who wrote: “How many your works are, O Jehovah! All of them in wisdom you have made. The earth is full of your productions.” *Psalm 104:24.

Is Evolution a Scientific Theory?

What qualifies a theory as a scientific theory? According to the Encyclopedia of Scientific Principles, Laws, and Theories, a scientific theory, such as Albert Einstein’s theory of gravity, must
  1. Be observable
  2. Be reproducible by controlled experiments
  3. Make accurate predictions
In that light, where does evolution stand? * Its operation cannot be observed. It cannot be reproduced. And it cannot make accurate predictions. Can evolution even be considered a scientific hypothesis? The same encyclopedia defines a hypothesis as “a more tentative observation of facts [than a theory],” yet lends itself “to deductions that can be experimentally tested.”
DOES IT MATTER?
Justice says yes! If God created life, then God deserves the credit, not evolution. (Revelation 4:11) Also, if we are the work of an all-wise Creator, then we are here for a reason. That would not be so if life were a result of undirected processes. *

QUESTION 1

How Did Life Begin?

A fertilized human egg cell, shown about 800 times its actual size

Some bacteria can make replicas of themselves within 20 minutes. Each cell copies all the controlling “computer programs.” Then it divides. If it had unlimited access to fuel, just one cell could increase in number exponentially. At that rate, it would take only two days to produce a clump of cells with a weight more than 2,500 times greater than that of the earth.15 Cells that are more complex can also replicate quickly. For example, when you were developing in your mother’s womb, new brain cells formed at the astounding rate of 250,000 per minute!16
Human manufacturers often have to sacrifice quality to produce an item at a fast pace. How is it possible, then, that cells can reproduce so fast and so accurately if they are the product of undirected accidents?

QUESTION 3

Where Did the Instructions Come From?

  1. The DNA is unwound here. An exposed strand passes information to the RNA
  2. The RNA “reads” the DNA, picking up the code within a gene. The DNA code tells the transcription machine where to start and stop
  3. Loaded with information, the RNA exits the cell nucleus and goes to a ribosome, where it will impart the instructions on how to build a complex protein
  4. Transcription machine

QUESTION 4

Has All Life Descended From a Common Ancestor?

  • Such pictures as this are based on the biases and assumptions of researchers and artists, not on facts.51
  •
The majority of such drawings are based on partial skulls and isolated teeth. Complete skulls, let alone complete skeletons, are rare.
  • There is no consensus among researchers as to how the fossils of the various creatures should be classified.
  •
Artists cannot reliably reconstruct the facial features, skin tone, and hair of these extinct creatures.
  • Each creature is placed in its position leading to modern man largely because of the size of its brain case. This is done despite evidence that brain size is not a reliable indicator of intelligence.

Is It Reasonable to Believe the Bible?

Have you ever been misled about a person? Maybe you heard others talk about him or quote him. You expected to dislike him—only to find, on getting to know him, that he had been misrepresented. Many have had such an experience regarding the Bible.
More than a few educated people take a dim view of the Bible. Can you understand why? That book is often represented or quoted in such a way that it sounds unreasonable, unscientific, or just plain wrong. Is it possible that the Bible has been misrepresented?

WAS IT DESIGNED?

COMPUTER users generate enormous amounts of digital data that has to be stored for access as needed. Scientists are hoping to revolutionize current methods for digital storage by imitating a far superior data-storage system found in nature—DNA.

Have you ever wondered what the future will be for you and your family? The Bible says:
“The righteous will possess the earth, and they will live forever on it.”—Psalm 37:29.
